The MinMax - New PC Science Thread

After months of indecision I finally settled on a new PC to replace my three year old Core2Duo system which is slowly but surely falling apart. In case anyone is interested in buying a system in the near future I'm going to list my new PC specifications and the reasoning for them.

CPU: Intel Core i5 760 - $239

The i5 is a fairly recent midrange CPU from Intel designed to be a cheaper alternative to the far more expensive i7 CPUs (The cheapest of the cheap i7 CPUs is $340). An argument can be made for the i5 760 being the best performance for value, as it is roughly the same price as equivalent AMD CPUs while outperforming them, and can come close to matching the performance of the more expensive Intel CPUs.

i7 Is a higher than i5, more equals better than!

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/109?vs=47

As the above benchmark shows, the extra threads the i7 cores provide don't mean anything if they are not being used. The i7 does beat the i5 in most large processing tasks, but the two processors are equal when it comes to games which only use 1-2 cores. Will games ever use 6 logical cores with 12 hyperthreads? Maybe, but probably not until the Xbox 360 (3 cores) is replaced. Most games are either console ports (3 cores max), or made by companies like Valve and Blizzard who as of yet have not released an engine that can use any more than 2 cores.

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD3R P55 MB 1 - $209

Standard motherboard, has support for SATA 3 and other fancy new things while not going overboard with RAID and other random crap that nobody actually needs. If this was an i7 motherboard, it would cost about $150 more which should factor into the CPU decision above. The downside is that it uses dual channel memory rather than triple channel, so the standard RAM layout will be 4gb rather than 6gb.

Graphics: Ati Radeon HD5850 - $400

A solid card which also fits into the best bang for buck bucket. Being ATI the drivers and software side of things is very shifty, as is game engine support. However there is no real equivalent Nvidia card, as the closest competitor is more expensive, runs hotter and uses more power. The GTX465 looks like it comes close if you are desperate for an Nvidia card. The 5850 is ridiculously long and won't fit in a lot of cases. My current case is an Antec Sonata 2 and the card actually creeps into the Hard Drive enclosure.

RAM: 4gb Kingston 1333mhz - $123

RAM is boring.

HDD: 1Tb WD1002FAEX WD SATA3 HDD - $114

Fancy new SATA3 HDD. This isn't the best value per GB, but its cheap and is one of the fastest drives available without buying a 10,000RPM drive or a Solid State Drive. Samsung have a very competitive drive but I don't really trust them yet because I'm paranoid and have 9 year old WD HDDs still going strong.

Case: CoolerMaster CM 690 II Advance 1 - $138

A decent big case with lots of fans, drive bays and handy places to put random cabling. Cases are kind of boring in terms of choice but my graphics card is absurdly long and this is one of the few cases that will fit it.

PSU: Corsair 750W HX-750 ATX - $229.00

Ive bought a lot of PSUs over the years, always getting just enough power to meet my needs, but I decided to spend some extra cash on a solid PSU and case which I can hopefully carry over to at least two future upgrades. 550W is way more than enough for my new system, so 750W should suffice for a long time to come. SLI will use up a lot of power, but SLI has yet to be a good value for money so it should be ignored. This is a modular PSU which means that the cables can be snapped on and off as needed instead of just hanging around in an empty drive bay waiting to get in the way.

That means your 4:3 wallpapers will look good on a 16:9 monitor.

Jump Folder is a Windows 7 tool designed to mimic some aspects of the Windows XP Start Menu. Specifically, it recreates the ability for the Start Menu to feature customisable sub-menus.

I created it because I wanted the Windows 7 Start Menu does not allow sub-items, nor does it allow reverting to XP Start Menu mode. Maybe you can find some use for it.

Read more here: http://deck16.net/jumpfolder/

Heys,

I don't know if people have heard of this;

http://appinventor.googlelabs.com/about/

An entry-level web-based app dev environment for Android phones. As someone who likes tinkering, does not have programming training, and has an Android phone, this is perfect for me!

Waiting to be granted access to it now. Rest assured once i've put some things together I will bore you to death with talking about it.
