There’s been a bit of controversy over the upcoming Star Wars MMO The Old Republic. Were there going to be same-sex relationships in the game? At first, their response was to say that the words “lesbian” and “gay” did not exist in the Star Wars universe. So, no.

(Personally, I find that silly. If they were writing a book or a movie, sure, they don’t have to include homosexual characters or themes any more than Harry Potter didn’t need to include guidelines on managing a hedge fund. But this is an MMO — the people playing it are from Earth, where gays and lesbians do exist. What’s more, Han Solo married a wookie, so I don’t see how same-sex relationships are even a big deal!)



And you thought C3PO was the campest Star Wars character. Not so.

They’ve since shifted on this position and now are saying that same-sex relationships will be added after release.

Now, obviously, there are fans of the game who are against the idea of homosexuals in their game. I want you to imagine the kind of thing they’d say in protest. Read on for the shocking truth…

The forum post that announces the inclusion of same-sex characters is here. It’s massive. And browsing through it I was simply stunned by the kinds of things the anti-same-sex people are saying. I mean, I never expected them to be nice… but wow…

I’m not going to look at the whole thread. That would take forever. Not to mention the fact that the forum mods have deleted the most offensive posts. So these are the worst posts that I’ve found.

(Note that I’m not going to attribute names to quotes because frankly, who cares who these people are.)

We will know who the homosexual companions are in the game. We will see them and the players who have them adventuring with them. I will /addignore every player I see using them. If Bioware wants to segregate the community so be it. Do they think we will not know which players are pursuing a homosexual relationship? This is not a sefl contained RPG that you play alone. The community will be subjected to these decisions.

I imagined myself sitting late at night, trying to skip conversations before getting some shuteye and suddenly one of those gay romances pops up and after doing Alt F4 on instinct I log back in and delete my character.

in the same patch that you add the lgbt bs, make sure to include the option to kill off companions permanently.

no all its doing is force lifestyles down peoples throat who dont believe in those things. It actually creates more anger than anything. If you are homosexual thats your choice, i accept that you have the right to choose that type of lifestyle. But why try and force feed everyone else on accepting it?

Well as i stated before i will not be letting my children play this game…im very disappointed at the fact they are chooseing to allow this into the video game that has to do with SW…NO WHERE in canon is there a Single Same gender romance and it should not be allowed in said video game…its just not right and for that fact my children will not be allowed to play this game and i am telling other ppl about it also im very disappointed with this descion…

I don’t want to even SEE the choice. Surely a simple compromise like adding a toggle in options to turn off SGRA dialogue options would not be difficult? I’m not joking when I say if I am being given options to flirt or romance my same gender companion when I did not WANT that option and was only looking to be friendly I will unsub.

Which I will state again when you are promoting a product on story and then add controversial and offensive story to the game you are alienating your main fan base that make up the bulk of your subscriptions to cater to a vocal minority.

If gay people try to gay roleplay on a pvp server best watch your back. A pvp server is well…pvp.

The level of violence in a teen rated game is perfectly acceptable to me. Having my children get used to romances online can leave them vulnerable to sexual predators in the future.

If [Bioware] wants to be realistic, then give my husband’s toon the option to punch my companion’s lights out if they hit on me regardless of gender. This is what would happen in RL.

My husband and I have been discussing this topic and following this thread since the announcement was made. We are huge Star Wars fans, but are seriously considering cancelling our 2 CE’s. I also will not get into our motivations. We just wanted to be counted with those against this addition.
