I’m fascinated by things like this, things which give you an insight into the past.
The source claims it was written by Theodor “Dr. Seuss” Geisel. I’m inclined to believe it. The video and music might be a bit lame, but the writing is simple and direct. It revolves around a few central themes and makes good use of repetition. Good for getting through the thick skulls of GIs.
Us modern audiences can find a lot to laugh about in old footage like this. But other than an extremely pessimistic outlook on the German people’s future, I think the film’s general premise was sensible. It’s aimed at front-line occupying soldiers. They should be alert and aloof. I love the cartoon soldier at 7:47 who stays cool through all situations — he really drives the message home!
Finally, I think it’s interesting to compare this with the US Army’s policies in Iraq and Afghanistian.
