I’m going to share with you one of my life’s simple pleasures. Take a listen.
I’ll often listen to ABC News Radio as I drift off to sleep. Time zone and population differences conspire that my bed time is when the least people are apparently listening so they often just switch to a BBC World Service feed.
At the start of every hour they’ll say something like:
This is the BBC in New York… Johannesburg… Kampala… Singapore… Wherever you are, you’re with the BBC.
Snuggled up under my doona, I feel a little bit of joy when I hear this. It’s like a teeny taste of a brotherhood of man. Wherever I am, whoever I am, whatever my purchasing power, however I vote… I’m with the BBC.
And it’s especially nice when my home town is one of the four randomly mentioned!
